Bintulu-Our Trip to Niah Caves(2008)

This is my second trip to the famous Niah cave.
Our group went in a nissan urvan i drove using the coastal road from
Bintulu which took us almost 2 hours to arrived.
Niah Caves is one of the famous caves in Sarawak besides the caves of Mulu.
Located on the Sungai (river) Niah, about 3 km from the small town of Batu Niah, a 110 km to the south-west of Miri in northern Sarawak. The park was first gazetted as a National Historic Monument in 1958, gazetted as National Park on 23 November 1974 and was published to the public on 1 January 1975. The Park is one of Sarawak's smaller national parks, but it is certainly one of the most important and has some of the most unusual visitor attractions. The park's main claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation in the region. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found at Niah, making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.(description from the Sarawak Forestry site)

The park Headquaters.

Sign board showing the distances of each place,so no complains later.

A short river crossing before the walk.

The Archaeology Museum immediately after the river crossing.

The cave painting as seen in the Archaeology museum.

The actual old painting in Painted Caves is protected with barb wires from itchy hands.

The new board walk is made of plastic, concrete bottom and wooden rails.

Mileage for the tired souls.

Souvenir stalls just before going into the caves, thes Iban ladies are mostly from Rumah Chang nearby.

Trader cave where once upon the time a hundred year ago, bird nest and guano was traded here.

Bamboo poles use by the swiftlet nest collectors to go up
and they are still doing it today.

The famous Niah Caves house in the Great Cave.

The stairways to the Padang area on the way the the Painted caves.
